Optional (for Extra Credit) Chapters 9 & 10

If you were one of the surviving sailors, would you have chosen to stay on Henderson Island or push on 3,000 miles to South America? Use details from the book to qualify and support your answer. Would it have made a difference if you were Pollard or Chase?

  1. I remain neutral on this question. It is basically a question of which way would you rather die?By starvation or drowning/being eaten by sea creatures? In the book it states that there are no usable sources of food on the island because the crew had exhausted all of the sources. In the book it also tells you about how rough being on the sea was.Yes,it would probaly make a difference on wether I was Chase or Pollard. If I was Pollard then I would probaly saty with the majority of the crew.I would be there captain and it would be wrong to desert my crew in there time of need. They need as much normalcy and stability as they can to remain sane.

  2. I agree with Ana in her statement that it is a choice to die on the island or at sea. I would choose to leave the island because you would have a better chance of surviving. The island has no food left for anyone to eat and if they go out to sea they could find a passing ship or fish for food. They have enough water from the spring on the island. On pollards boat the crew is jut a gravely affected as the others but they decide to carry on. They were determined to catch up and find chases boat. Obed's boat ran out of food/water and pollard wasn't sure to help them out or ration the food for his boat. I think they made a mistake by sharing it with the other boat.... knowing the food would be gone in a few days.

  3. Well my comment is a little biased because i know how the Island Affair turns out. I would stay on the island for 2 reasons(food/water and helping my crew mates by giving up my rations). Knowing that these 3 men get saved, i would take this option. If I was Pollard or Chase, it would have been a different story. I would want to do whats best for the WHOLE crew, not just myself as these Islanders are choosing to do. It is a noble but idiotic idea when I look on it after the fact.
